Regionals Game 2: WR 8U Blue 15, Southwest (Ga.) 1

Everyone should take a very deep breath and keep in mind that 8U Blue was the home team in Thursday's second game of pool play. Now, while holding that breath, take a look at this photo:

Yes, that is a 40-6 deficit facing the home team. What's more, the home team had managed to give up those 40 runs while allowing just two hits. That's a pretty bad day.

Luckily, it was just a momentary scoreboard malfunction, and West Raleigh cruised to a 15-1 win over Southwest (Ga.) in a game shortened to four innings by the ten-run rule. If defense was the story of the first game, offense was the theme of game two, as 8U Blue sent at least 10 hitters to the plate in two of its three offensive innings.

The victory gave West Raleigh a 2-0 mark in pool play for the game's first day. On Friday, they will face the other 2-0 team in the pool, Giles County (Tenn.), in addition to playing Glen Allen (Va.).

Game 2 8U Blue scoring plays
First inning
Bryce led off with a single, and then back to back fly balls to right from JT and Gavin loaded the bases with no outs. Chace ripped an RBI single and Jake drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Joey came through yet again with an RBI single. With two down, Elias and Ben picked up RBI singles to complete the scoring.
Score after one inning: 8U Blue 5, Southwest 0

Second inning
A ten-run inning, tied for the second-biggest inning of the summer, broke out in the second. Fifteen West Raleigh batters came to the plate, starting with Bryce blasting a triple to left. JT scored him with a fielder's choice to make it 6-0, but then Gavin started the hit parade again with a single up the middle. Chace singled, and then Jake went back through the middle, scoring Chace. Joey singled, and then two scored on Andrew's single. Elias went the other way for a two-run single, and then hustled hard to second on a ground ball from Ben and beat the throw to second. Carter drove in one with a deep double to left. Bryce, batting for the second time in the inning, singled to score Ben. JT singled home Carter, and Chace doubled home Bryce to end the big inning.
Score after two innings: 8U Blue 15, Southwest 0

Game 2 Web Gems
  • With two out and two on in the third, Gavin dove into the hole between shortstop and third base to snag the third out of the inning.
  • After missing eight games in a row, Mason was able to go to left field as a defensive substitute in the fourth. The first batter of the fourth, of course, smacked a hard line drive to left, which Mason wisely veered out of the way of, thus saving Coach Sean from the wrath of an angry doctor.
